Masking Policy for Deleted Users

I’ve had one objection and lots of agreement. I am proceeding as follows:

  • I am creating a list of entries to Necrologue offline.
  • Where I know who they are, I will be leaving a comment on people’s deletion entries, giving their name with all vowels asterisked.

UPDATE: First vowel asterisked. Too hard to work out otherwise.

New Blog for Deactivated Quora Users

Per discussion under Do we care about Deactivations?, I will be launching a new blog limited to reporting deactivations. This blog will complement Necrologue. Deactivations with the following criteria will still feature on Necrologue:

  • Deactivations accompanied with a quit notice, indicating that the user
    • is leaving Quora permanently
    • is leaving Quora temporarily, at least in part because of reasons internal to Quora (moderation, trolling, UI, whatever)

Deactivations with no quit notice, or that are temporary and for personal reasons (studying for exams, adopting puppies, preserving marriages) shall be reported to the new blog instead.

The new blog shall accept submissions by any Quora user, and I will be limiting my involvement to accepting subscriptions, and reading it.

The people of Quora can name the blog whatever they want, so long as they choose one of the four obscure Hellenic names I’ve just made up for it, by 2017–04–11.

Masking the Deleted

As you will have noted with some puzzlement, I don’t name deleted users, out of respect of their desire to unperson themselves from Quora: they have the reasonable expectation that they will no longer be searchable on Quora, if they have removed all their content from Quora by deleting their account. (That won’t quite be true, because there will be some plaintext instances of their names, but not many.)

This of course has caused endless confusion for readers of Necrologue, as they have no idea who is being mentioned.

I’m proposing a compromise of adding to the link an obfuscated version of the deleted users’ name, so that people can have at least a hint of who they were. For example,

  • Nick N.
  • N*ck N*ch*l*as

Is that respecting their wishes, or too much of a loophole?

Unbanned:

Yeah man. Not sure what happened. I just got an email out of the clear blue saying my priviliges were reinstated. I never even appealed the ban.

Posts on this blog will only point to the profile of users, and mention any reason for sanction given in edit profiles. Speculation about why people have been banned or blocked will not be entertained. BNBR applies in comments.
